Summary: Moderate to heavy snow is falling in northern Utah Saturday morning, with valley accumulations much larger than expected (in excess of 6"). Brief window between storms 1 am Sunday - 10 am Sunday. Another storm for Monday-Tuesday followed by a cold transition period Wednesday-Thursday. How rapidly and how strongly expected ridge of high pressure builds over Utah at the end of week remains uncertain at this time.Low temperatures will be 20-25 degrees F with high temperatures 30-35 degrees F through the period until 10+ F colder air entrenches across the region starting Wednesday and continuing through weekend.
Saturday 21 January: Snow (total 2-5"). Snow decreasing after noon.
Sunday 22 January Break period from 1 am --10 am Sunday. Snow likely after noon. Breezy. Southerly winds in 25-35 kt range.
Monday 23 January Snow likely.
Tuesday 24 January Scattered light snow showers.
Wednesday 25 January Mostly cloudy, cold. Potential "non-inversion" day with no flight visibility restrictions.
Thursday 26 January Partly cloudy, cold. Potential "non-inversion" day with no flight visibility restrictions.
Friday 27 January onward. Potential for start of major ridge over western US, a prolonged cold-air pool episode. The placement of the high pressure ridge remains uncertain, which has large implications for the strength of the persistent cold-air pool expected.
